Bob's one man show actually started off as a book!! It was to be a backstage anecdotal look at the "ins and outs" of Universal Studios Tour, where Bob had been a guide for 5 years. After sharing his ideas with good friend and writer Steve Leiva, they both decided the book concept would also make a great sitcom.
About this time, Bob was asked to teach an animation seminar at Judy Carter's Comedy Conference in Palm Springs. Steve joined Bob at the conference, where they networked with all kinds of show biz movers and shakers. One of the topics of the weekend was how to launch a one man show. Steve thought that adapting the Tour Guide sitcom idea into a one man show would be a great way to showcase the stories and characters Bob was working on. Through some good old fashioned show biz schmoozing on Steve's part, Bob was invited to showcase his one man show on his return to Los Angeles. The problem: it had to be written!!
They returned from the conference, and Bob began to put his guide stories down on tape. Steve took the tapes and translated the material into script form. The project was falling together great!! But Steve thought something was missing. He felt the audience should know more about Bob. He came up with the idea that Bob share stories of how he got into voice-over, and in particular how he got the job of voicing Porky Pig. Steve always found it amusing that Bob's goal wasn't to just do voices for cartoons, but that he specifically wanted to BE Porky Pig. So, back to the tape recorder Bob went to add the ups and downs of his eh-vuh-veh-eh-voice-over career.
With a finished script, Steve contacted the people he'd networked with at Judy Carter's Comedy Conference to take them up on their offer to put up Bob's one man show. With just a few days of rehearsal under his belt, Bob did a one time "trial" performance of his show to an invited audience of about 35 people in Burbank. Steve taped the performance and showed it to his good friend Ken Kragen. Kragen, who managed a variety of artists including Kenny Rogers, loved the show. He informed Bob that Rogers was in need of an opening act for his summer 1999 tour, and asked if his 75 minute one man show could be cut to a 20 minute routine. OH-and it all needed to be ready to leave for the tour in a few days!! Bob's response?? Uh...sure??!!
The Kenny Rogers tour went great!! On their return, Steve arranged for Bob to put up his show at The Ice House in Pasadena, and The Whitefire Theater in Sherman Oaks, where it was seen by producer Ed Gaynes. Gaynes offered to produce the show commercially. Bob Bergen, Not Just Another Pretty Voice enjoyed a 3 month run at the Whitmore-Lindley Theater in the NOHO district of LA. OH-and as for the original sitcom idea?? Eh-stuh-steh-eh stay tuned, folks!!
